Urgent appeal asking Qantas to reconsider its Extreme Weather Policy
We are deeply concerned about Qantas' recent enforcement of it's extreme weather policy, which has already begun to impact on SAFE’s regional branches in Broome, Newman, Hedland and Karratha as well as the well-being of animals and the communities we serve and request for the policy to be waived, or at least reviewed. If not animal's lives WILL be lost.

SAFE is a non-profit organisation that rescues and rehomes animals in need across Western Australia. Our northern branches rely on Qantas flights to transport animals to Perth, where they have a better chance of finding an adoptive home.

However, the new policy restricts the transport of animals if the expected temperature at any part of the day is forecast to reach 35C +, Qantas will not allow animal(s) to fly. This means that for approx. 7 months of the year, SAFE will not be able to fly animals out of the northern regions due to the normal climate in the area.

On these forecasted days, SAFE animals would have been booked on early morning flights when the temperature is much lower, for example, flights that have been cancelled by Qantas due to forecasted temperatures being over 35C, when the animals would have been waiting to fly the temperature was 20-22 C.

Qantas's policy will also impact equally on owned pets due to travel with their owners (for example relocation) - where will they go until the temperatures drop back down to under 35C? Will they need to be relinquished to SAFE as they simply cannot fly?

This will have a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of animals who will have nowhere to stay, as SAFE are a foster based rescue, and they will face possible euthanasia.

With your support we are asking Qantas to review their policy and find a way to accommodate and understand the needs of SAFE and the animals we save, and have done so for the last 20 years flying them all year round without incident.
